Satellite Radio – It’s Not Your Father’s Sputnik

Ever wonder how this whole satellite radio thing works? I mean, it seems to be THE thing now. Many auto manufacturers are installing satellite radio receivers in their new automobiles, and there are home and portable models available through your favorite electronics outlet. But what is it? How does it work? Why should I pay for radio?

You pay for TV, don’t you?

Once, in those long gone days of yore, cable television operators offered us television, which we had happily been receiving for free through big tree-branchy things on our roofs, for a fee. Many people scoffed at the idea of paying for 30 channels when they received four or five, gratis. Well, just look at us now – cable TV, satellite TV, 500 channels not quite filling us up. So let’s stop asking questions about why you should pay for satellite radio, and let’s find out how the dern thing works.

Well, how does the dern thing work?

Where is the Future of Radio?

With advances in technology there is much talk that terrestrial AM and FM radio could be in trouble. As mp3 players, ipods, and satellite radio grow in popularity there is a belief by many that terrestrial radio will become extinct. However, AM and FM radio has an answer to these technologies and it’s on the internet.

Radio companies across the country and the world are now streaming live through their radio websites. Listeners can simply log on to their favorite radio website and listen almost instantly to the live on-air broadcast through the speakers of their computer. These internet radio streams are usually accessible from anywhere in the world. A recent story on InsideRadio.com stated “Terrestrial radio’s doing better and better in the streaming game – up to a 38.5% share. Radio’s websites were up 18% to 19.9 million unique visitors for March. That’s the highest yet according to commScore Media Metrix.”

Internet Radio Streaming is in its infancy stage and although it’s growing rapidly, there are still things that need to be fixed. Radio stations can take up to 30 seconds for an internet radio stream to load and the feed can often be lost for short periods of time during a session.

Types and Features of Two Way Radios

Walkie-talkies are tools that enable verbal communication with other people using the same equipment. Two way radios can be said to be the advanced version of walkie-talkies and function the same way as the later does. Describing it straight, two way radio is like a radio that transmits as well as receives voice contents, unlike a broadcast receiver, which only receives the voice content.

Usually, there are two types of two way radios available today. The first operates on Family Radio Service (FRS) while the second operates on General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS). FRS radios are for personal usage and are quite inexpensive. If weather is favourable, it can transmit signals up to a maximum distance of 2 miles. To own as well as use it, one doesn’t need a license. GMRS radios are, on the other hand more expensive than FRS, and can transmit signals to a maximum distance of up to 10 miles. These radios transmit at pretty high power levels and require a GMRS license to be operated.

The Satellite Radio Service Experience

Satellite radio services have been in the news for quite a while, and the two main providers in the United States have gained millions of subscribers. There are still billions of people who haven’t experienced the difference between a satellite radio system and a traditional radio, though. It may cost a few extra dollars, but satellite radio services offer much more than AM/FM radio.

The most obvious difference between satellite radio services and traditional radio is the hundreds of channels that are available. The two main satellite radio providers in the United States, Sirius and XM, each offer well over 100 channels to choose from. The channels are also practically commercial-free, save for a few station identifications. With so many channels available, the satellite radio services can cater to every niche market all at once. Listeners can peruse music stations from every decade and every genre; whether it’s alternative country or mainstream top 40 or anything else they are in the mood for. There are also news, talk, traffic, weather, sports and other types of entertainment channels.

Internet Talk Radio – the Tale of Its Evolution

Radios have been a source of entertainment since a long time now. Radio has been really powerful in the past, specially at the times when older folks used to sit in front of the old dial tune box radio getting carried away listening to some hit talk shows from the past. When it all started there were only AM channels and these channels mainly had talk shows and story-telling. There was music too, but not to the great extent as it happened later. With the introduction of the FM channels, music programs were shifted mainly to the FM-s while the talk shows and stories remained for the AM channels.

However, with the popularization of TV as an alternate media for entertainment, the power of AM and FM radio was greatly diminished. Due to its variety of channels, great options and greater appeals to the senses, TV had almost driven the once powerful radio out of business. Nonetheless, some still held on to the old radio. It was probably because they could get into a multi-tasking mode i.e. doing other things while still listening to their favorite radio programs. This was one thing that they could probably have not been able to do with TV. TV required them to sit in front of it and concentrate on the programs. But this small issue was too minor to stop the diminishing power and importance of radio as a primary source of entertainment. Soon, radio was a thing of the past.

Three Great Reasons to Buy an HD Radio

Have you heard one of your local stations say it was “now broadcasting in crystal-clear HD radio,” and wondered what the heck is HD radio?

The simple answer is that HD radio is digital radio, vs. the radio you are hearing now, which is analog. Analog radio is like an old tried and true friend that’s been around almost forever and is probably an integral part of your life. In comparison, digital radio is the new kid on the block — a new technology that does for radio what high definition does for television. It takes the same programming, and just makes it one heckuva lot better.

Reason number one: Once you hear it you won’t want to go back

HD radio sounds so much better than conventional radio, it’s like the difference between a 1948 Hudson Hornet and one of today’s Lexus LX-400s. Listening to AM radio broadcast in digital HD is so clear and static-free you may think you’re listening to FM radio. And FM radio broadcast in HD is so superior to normal FM, you may think you’re listening to a CD. I have personally tested several different HD radios and can tell you from first-hand experience that once you have heard your favorite stations in HD, you just won’t want to go back to conventional radio.
